Dan:
Wilco - “Panthers”
What’s that? You’ve never heard of this song? That’s because this song, originally recorded for “A Ghost is Born,” is only available on a “Tour only” EP… which is now on iTunes.
Amit:
Gary Jules - “Mad World”
Michael Andrews plays the piano as Gary Jules whispers lyrics that scream out solitude and silence in this track featured in the Donnie Darko film. It’s a good song to pour yourself a drink, melt into a think couch and stare. Then realize, “there’s no 6 foot tall freaky bunny stalking me”, smile, and get another drink.
Max:
Swell Maps - “Midget Submarines”
Nikki Sudden died this last sunday at only 49, so in tribute to his cracked genius is this pre-past-post-punk classic from his old band, Swell Maps. From the unadorned snare rattling at the beginning to it’s noise rambling end (on which bassist Jowe Head, having discovered the bass part was layed down without him, decided to play the vacuum cleaner, “to add some tension”), this is everything art punk was and would be rolled into four and a half minutes of amateurish grandeur. RIP Nikki.
Nate:
Talking Heads - “This Must be the Place (Naive Melody)”
David Byrne had a thing for cryptic and paranoid lyrics. This song was an exception. Perhaps his only real love song. Backdropped by the world beat funk that characterized the entire Speaking in Togues album and Byrne doing the solo number on the keyboard, this might be the most sincere “ballad” you will ever hear. My personal favorite version is off the Stop Making Sense live album. Just maybe you will want to get back in the saddle after having your heart broken in 9th grade geometry class. And I guess that’s it. This song is about being love-struck and stargazing. It gives you reason to believe.

Do you wish you could see in the future? C&V can. Could you live with yourself for making fun of young kids? C&V does, and now so do the copy cats over at The Learning Channel. There’s a new show debuting this April called “Honey We’re Killing the Kids!” The series will give concerned parents the chance to see what their children will look like 40 years in the future if they continue on their junk food regimen. Using advanced computer technology (Microsoft Paint), the prophetic pictures hope to be a wake-up call to obese kids in order to scare them straight (if they were troublesome and/or fruity) and skinny. Below is an example of what TLC’s Gateway computer printed out. Apparently Timmy’s side-of-a-milk-carton smile will age into a Zoloft-induced smirk worn by the ‘tard Jared the Subway Guy’s look alike.

Kelly Young, mother of three, said about the photos, “for a mom, they’re scary, let me tell you.” Nutritionist/host Dr. Lisa Hark from University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine will helm the series created to further lower the self-esteem of pre-pubescent kids who are called “Baby Beluga” and “The Krispy Kreme Kid” at school. Our news team contacted Dr. Hark for some exclusives, and she came through, “let me tell you.” The doc sent us some child celebrity versions slated to appear on the season finale. Let’s look into the future…

Our friends at the AP just sent me a text message. The “Policeman” from the flaming disco group, “The Village People” is facing jail time. In many circles, the “Policeman” simply goes by the name “Rusty Trombone,” but legally he answers to Victor Willis. And now, young Victor is doomed to a living hell… Jail. A place without privacy. A place where you shower right alongside your soapy, wet, naked jail breathren. A place where promiscuous, unprotected homosexual sex is forced upon poor innocent virgins like Mr. Willis.
What’s all the uproar about? Why’s 54-year-old, Victor “Rusty Trombone” Willis riding the A-train to the slammer? I’ll let the AP do the talking:
Willis was arrested last year on charges of possessing a gun and cocaine, but he disappeared after agreeing to a plea deal that set a maximum sentence of 16 months behind bars… He was re-arrested on Sunday and the singer is due in court on Tuesday
No doubt, Willis was scared. The threat of a living hell–of having naked jail love on a daily basis, sometimes multiple times a day–struck him to the core and he simply had to flee. Yet, here’s the irony. Those lost months on the lam will up Willis’ sentence from 16 months to Four Freaking Years behind bars. It seems that in his fear-clouded mind, young Willis has unknowingly TRIPLED his jail time.

We here at Celluloid And Vinyl have gained access to the exclusive phone conversation of Willis turning himself in. Click below to read the transcript:

So Jack White’s side project, The Raconteurs, a “super group” composed of White, Brendan Benson, and The Greenhornes, have announced one date (God willing, the first of many) for about a week from today in NYC. This comes in addition to their previously scheduled August 4th performance at Chicago’s Lollapalooza. Now, all of this is just your average run-of-the-mill music tour date news… but, the reason I post it is because I just found the video for their first single “Steady As She Goes” which is directed by Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, Coffee and Cigarettes). And that very special collision of good movies with good music is something very worthy of a post. Click the link or photo below to watch it.
