Keith “looks like a monkey” Richards is busy dying ’round the world again, this time in Fiji. CNN just broke the news that the simian guitar legend is in a New Zealand hospital being treated for a concussion. Here’s, no lie, what happened: Keith Richards was in a coconut tree. He fell and got a concussion. He then hopped on a Jet Ski and crashed it.
That’s not a lie. That actually happened. Now, you’re probably asking yourself, “haven’t I read about other Richards shenanigans on C&V?” You’re right. He’s also been electrocuted, his French villa was the subject of a drug raid in 1972, and he’d inject liquor (and heroin) into his bloodstream once upon a time.
And now, a Keith Richards fact courtesy of Songfacts.com:
While in Clearwater, Florida on The Stones third US tour in 1965, Keith Richards woke up in his hotel room with the guitar riff and lyric “Can’t get no satisfaction” in his head. He recorded it on a portable tape deck, went back to sleep, and brought it to the studio that week. The tape contained his guitar riff followed by the sounds of him snoring.

Dan & Amit on the Aisle: Keith Richards
Here’s an actual conversation between me (screaming Hasselhoff) and Amit (gorilla holding banana) about the above pic.

Dan:
Lynyrd Skynyrd - “The Ballad of Curtis Loew”
Giving a lonely man bottlecaps to play a dobro has never sounded so good. “Curtis Loew” is one of the finer, lesser-played Skynyrd ditties. It’s from their second album, aptly titled “Second Helping,” which also contained “Swamp music,” “Workin’ for MCA,” “Call me the breeze,” and a little forgotten opener called “Sweet Home Alabama.” If this were “Albums of the week,” I’d say buy “Second Helping.” But this is “Songs of the week,” so buy my favorite off the album, “The Ballad of Curtis Loew.”
Amit:
Madeleine Peyroux - “Between the Bars”
Madeleine is the whitest woman to sound like Billie Holiday to date. Hear her add her own sensual and solemn tone to the late Elliott Smith’s “Between the Bars“, but don’t become a cutter.
Nate:
Randy Newman - “Shame”
Randy Newman wrote this song about New Orleans. I would guess. Someone so enamored with the idea of New Orleans wrote a song about an “angry, powerless man.” This was it. And still is, mind you. Saying a song is great is like saying a book is great or a movie is great. It doesn’t have to make you feel good. Some say “if it feels good, do it.” But in the words of Tim Kinsella of Cap’n Jazz, and careful use of the comma, “If it feels. Good, do it.” This song feels.

On April 19th Ben & Jerry’s held their annual “Free Cone Day” at participating frozen dessert outlets across the country. Unfortunately, I didn’t arrive quick enough to savor a cone of Phish Food or cup of Half Baked. But, we learned a few celebrities did. That’s right. Stars who have millions of dollars to their name love the taste of free, and last Tuesday, it was free ice cream. Staying true to our celebrity curiosities, we scoured the net for images of stars at Ben and Jerry’s stores getting their eat on, and boy did we find some winners. Take a look at their high jinks.

Kellie Pickler, my future wife, was voted off of American Idol tonight. We first fell in love with the blonde, country darling many moons ago while she was honing her vocal chops at her local Sonic eatery. But what’s the future hold for a girl that wears an outfit like this? And sings like this? Come with C&V and find out.
1) Sweet love in the back of my ‘Vette at Sonic
2) Homelessness

3) Bring Long Honor to Home Country

4) Wishin’ in one hand, Shittin’ in another. Seein’ which fills up first.

5) Birthin’ my quintuplets
