I had zero expectations for DeVotchKa having only heard of them a few weeks prior Bonnaroo. They were the band responsible for setting the tone and overall drive for my weekend and their energy exploded off like a bottlerocket with report. For those unfamiliar with the Denver-based quartet, DeVotchKa’s melodies and emotional outcries stem from eastern European/Russian music. And its obvious why. They use non-traditional rock insturments such as a bouzouki (small lute-like guitar) and a sousaphone (a type of tuba). Combine all that with lead singer Nick Urata’s vocals and you’ve got a truly unique group with the stage presence (see photo) and skill to usher in the world’s greatest outdoor music festival.
